NEW FURNITURE UPCYCLING WORKSHOPS AT PETIT MIRACLE
Starting Saturday 5th April 2014, every first and second Saturday of the month will officially be furniture upcycling day!

Join us at the Petit Miracle shop in London West12 to work on an item of your choice….

Skills needed: in short, none.
The session is suitable for all skill levels, including:

  • beginners
  • those who know some of the basics, wanting to build their skill
  • and those wanting to refresh their memories.

You will learn the following:

  • minor furniture repairs
  • sanding
  • painting
  • waxing / finishing furniture

Price: £20 per person. This includes all tools and materials.
Please note: if you would like to purchase the item you have worked on,
you will be given a discount off of the purchase price.

Bring your own item supplement: £5.
If have your own furniture item you wish to bring in, upcycle and take home,
we need to charge £5 additional to the workshop costs,
to cover tools and materials – so the total price would be £25.

Concessions:
There is a limited number of spaces offered, at £5,
to people who have experienced homelessness, and/or the long-term unemployed.

Workshops are back! Here’s what we have planned for the last week of November 2013:

On Thursday 28th November 2013, the wonderful and weird volunteers of Petit Miracle Interiors will guide you towards creative excellence in our all new FIX-A-CHAIR evening…

You will learn – you guessed it – how to upcycle a chair!

Time & place
From 5.30 to 7.30 pm on Thursday, November 28th at the Petit Miracles Shepherd’s Bush, first floor of West12 centre.

Skills needed
In short: none. This session is suitable for all skill levels, but is particularly focused on complete beginners, those who know some of the basics but want to build their skill, and those wanting to refresh their memories.

Skills to be learned
Upcycling a chair will help you gain the following skills:

  • minor furniture repairs
  • sanding furniture
  • painting furniture
  • waxing / finishing furniture

Price
We ask for a contribution of £10 per person for the costs of this evening extravaganza. The price includes all tools and materials. Please note: the chair you have upcycled will remain the property of Petit Miracle Interiors to sell in our shop. You will be given the opportunity to buy the chair you have worked on.

If have your own chair you wish to bring in, upcycle and take back home with you, there is a premium of £5 additional to the workshop costs, to cover tools and materials. So the total workshop price if you will be working on an item for yourself would then be £15.

The workshops are offered free of charge to people who have experienced homelessness, and/or the long-term unemployed.

  • Traditional Upholstery: removing old materials, applying tacs, webbing, etc.

or

  • Furniture Restoration: sanding, prepping, painting.

Workshop price: £10

Free for people who have experienced homelessness, and/or the long-term unemployed.

If you have experienced homelessness or you are long-term unemployed (1+ year) you can access our Design Bank scheme: when people sign up for workshops they learn the art of upcycling and build credits towards their ‘time-bank account’. These time credits can be used to offset the price of items from the project. In other words, you can use your time credits in combination with cash, to purchase items.

Petit Miracles launch party – guest blog by Dawn Newton

I had the pleasure of attending the Petit Miracles launch party, it was a night to remember. Here are my five reasons why.

1. The team – rarely do you encounter a group who really do all pull together when it matters to bring an event to life, the event may have seemed effortless but it was weeks of work and help from more than 20 people and many late nights to get everything just so. I think the reason for this is that everyone involved in the shop believes in it’s mission to give furniture & people a second chance.

2. The venue – the shop which has been given free by the shopping centre landlord Land securities may have been a McDonalds in a past life but Elisicia and her team have transformed it into a vibrant space jam packed with new ideas and beautiful furniture. As soon as you walk into the space you can tell that it is a special place, you get a warm welcome and see the bespoke and one off pieces and funky décor.  The shop is shared with Healthy Planet so it also has a books for free section where you can pick up 3 free books. 3. The guests – I have been to hundreds of events and have never been to one with such a diverse range of people, all waxing lyrical about the amazing work Petit Miracles does everyday. I spoke to quite a few people, they were all really interesting with their own stories and reasons for loving the cause ranging from the employability opportunity, environmental benefits of upcycling, artists & creatives interested in interior design and innovation, crafty types who love the unique pieces, business partners who love seeing the positive impact it is having on the local community. I know Elisicia was really honoured that the Mayor of Hammersmith came along to the event and made a short speech congratulating them on the beautiful shop (she loved the upcycled denim jeans chair).

4. The small touches –  I have a theory that with events it is often the details which make it really special, Elisicia had a vision for the event and the team worked really hard to make that a reality. Brand new window dressing, special displays indoors, real time visual minutes, name badges to encourage networking, guests could sign the pink welcome table and describe PMI in one word, will displays with the people that are part of the team and their stories (several of which are unemployed and Elisicia is teaching them how to refurbish furniture – they volunteer in the shop)  and they even GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAhad a DJ.

5. The Speech – it must be said that the event had plenty of heart, if you are lucky enough to meet / work with Elisicia you will instantly know what I mean. She works tirelessly to help others and rescue furniture from landfill. So as you can imagine her speech was brilliant and her list of people to thank was very long, it was really emotional and shows that so much of the work within the shop is about people connecting again, whether it’s the volunteer team, or members of public who come in regularly.
